The GGTC Ironman Training Program!
Welcome to the Golden Gate Triathlon Club's highly successful Ironman training program. The program continues to be coached by Trifiniti Endurance Performance Coach, Duane Franks, a 14-time Ironman and Ultraman experienced health fitness expert who has coached over 100 successful Ironman finishes, including Kona Age Group winners and Ironman distance world record holders. Duane’s personal training and coaching business, Trifiniti, provides athletes with full service coaching and training plans. We are lucky to have Coach Duane for our inaugural program. Whether your goal is to simply finish your first IM, set a personal record or qualify for Kona, Coach Duane and the support of this training group will help you every step along the way. Training for and completing an Ironman event is an experience of a lifetime. Don’t miss this opportunity to be part of it.

*REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN*

The Ironman training program is designed for athletes who have completed at least one Half IM distance event in the past 2 years. The program will be limited in space. The 6-month training regimen begins in early January and culminates in late June at the Ironman Coeur d’Alene in Idaho. This program can be adapted to work for IM races taking place in the May-Early August timeframe, so if IM CDA is not in your plan, the program can still work for you.

As a participant in this program you will receive a 25-week periodized training program (split up into two 12-week segments) and will utilize an account with TrainingPeaks.com. TrainingPeaks.com is a powerful software tool that allows participants to track their training on a day to day basis and allows Coach Duane the ability to keep track of participant progress and workout notes.

The program cost will be $270 for each 12-14 week session, including the initial $50 deposit. This works out to $21/week, a great deal for professional coaching and a customized workout plan! Non-GGTC members will also pay for a year of membership at $65, which gives you access to all of the member benefits.

Half IM Option: Not sure if you want to do an Ironman this year? Or, you want to but didn’t get in? No problem. The first 14-week session (which can be purchased separately), will build your endurance and speed to peak for California 70.3 (formerly Ralph’s), while also setting a solid foundation to go longer in the summer. Even better news is that California 70.3 may have more IM slots available for various races, including IM Coeur d’Alene (the race that the majority of the group will do). In 2007, all athletes who wanted an IMCDA slot at Oceanside earned one simply by finishing the half IM event. There are currently 274 "Community slots available for the sold out 2009 IM CDA. Visit North American Sport's website for more information.

The 25-week program will begin December 29th with our first group workout scheduled on January 4, 2009 and will continue through the day of the event, June 21, 2009. Athletes racing in other events will have a slightly different schedule and end date. Coach Duane is scheduling orientation meetings, watch for upcoming dates.

FAQS
Who is this for? This program is intended for our intermediate to advanced experienced athletes, meaning you've raced at least one Half IM distance event in the past 2 years. This program is not for the beginning triathlete, The GGTC has several other successful programs such as Tri & Give and HIT for those training for their first short distance and half IM events As a participant, you're in good condition and will be carrying a base level of fitness into this program. GGTC-members only please.
When will I be working out? Training schedules will be provided 6-weeks at a time at least one week in advance. As a participant, you'll be able to log-in to TrainingPeaks.com and view your workout schedule. There will be one (1) group workout each week of the program. More than 90% of these will be held on the weekend with others, a few mid week evenings. In addition to the coached workout, a scheduled non-coached group workout will also be planned for every weekend (sometimes both days) by participants and posted to the IM CDA discussion list.
Where will I be training? TrainingPeaks.com is an internet-based tool, meaning anywhere you can find internet access, you can train! Weekend group workouts will be held here in the Bay Area. Athletes living outside the Bay Area have successfully used this training plan as well. Contact Coach D to discuss this possibility if you live outside the Bay Area.
What happens if I can't make it to all the workouts? As an experienced athlete, you are expected to complete the individual coached workouts on your own or with fellow team mates. Your training calendar will be posted to TrainingPeaks.com so you'll be given plenty of opportunity to plan ahead! Are group workouts still held if it's raining? Yes. Sunday runs are held rain or shine. Trifiniti has a special arrangement with the San Francisco Bay Club that allows use of the large cycling studio and pool during rainy Saturdays. There is a nominal fee for use of the club.
